Chenegella Shusheela, the brave girl
Chenegella Shusheela, a 15-year girl of a village of Andhra Pradesh is named for the Bapu Gayadhani national bravery award by Govt. of India. She will be receiving the award for ending her own child marriage. She was married to one Narsimhulu on April 2003 at the age of 13. June 12, 2005 was a very important day for her, when she told the Panchayat of her decision of terminating her marriage.
Since then she was subjected to all kinds of taunts and harassment by all the villagers including her own parents. But the brave girl stood on her ground. She wants to become a doctor in life.
Shusheela will be awarded by the president of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. She wants to ask the President to put an end to the evil practice of child marriage.
Let’s all give this brave girl standing ovation and wish her dream come true. Bravery is not only in fighting your enemy outside, bravery also lies in fighting the enemies within, i.e. social evils, poverty. I wish that more and more girls follow her path and raise their voices, which only will give us, Indians, prosperity and freedom.
